In Greek mythology, who created Pandora on Zeus’s instructions?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Hephaestus created Pandora on Zeus’s instructions. Hesiod’s Works and Days says Zeus ordered the divine smith Hephaestus to form the first woman from earth and water, giving her a human shape.

Hephaestus was the Olympian god associated with fire, metalworking, craftsmanship, and invention. His role in Pandora’s creation fits the wider Greek pattern in which gods manufacture or shape extraordinary objects and beings. After Hephaestus formed Pandora, other gods supplied her with qualities and gifts.

The myth links Pandora’s creation to Zeus’s punishment of humanity after Prometheus stole fire and gave it to mortals. Pandora is therefore not simply an independent character entering the story; she is introduced as part of a deliberate divine response. Prometheus and Epimetheus belong to the same mythic sequence, but neither is credited with making her.
