In Greek mythology, who created Pandora as part of Zeus’s punishment of humanity?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Hephaestus created Pandora as part of Zeus’s punishment of humanity.

Hesiod’s account says Zeus ordered Hephaestus, the divine smith, to fashion Pandora from earth. Other gods then contributed qualities or gifts: Athena clothed her, Aphrodite gave her beauty, and Hermes gave her a deceptive nature and speech. The name Pandora is commonly explained as “all-gifted” or “all-giving.”

The creation follows Prometheus’s theft of fire for humans. Zeus’s punishment was directed not only at Prometheus but also at humanity, which would receive Pandora as a seemingly desirable gift. Her arrival introduced suffering into human life after the jar was opened.

Some retellings make Pandora a passive victim or focus only on curiosity. Hesiod’s original story is more layered: her creation is a divine plan, and the gods deliberately combine attractive qualities with deception.
