In Greek mythology, who commissioned the creation of Pandora as a punishment for Prometheus’s theft of fire?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Zeus commissioned the creation of Pandora as a punishment for Prometheus’s theft of fire.

Prometheus had deceived Zeus during a sacrifice and later stolen fire for humanity. Zeus responded by ordering the gods to create Pandora, a woman fashioned from earth and endowed with gifts. Her arrival formed part of Zeus’s wider punishment of humankind and Prometheus.

Hesiod’s Works and Days presents the story as an explanation for why suffering and hard work exist among humans. The myth is not simply a tale about curiosity: it links Pandora’s creation to a conflict between Zeus and Prometheus over the proper limits of human power.

Modern retellings often call the container a box, but ancient Greek accounts describe a large storage jar. “Pandora’s box” became the standard expression through later translation and artistic tradition.
