In Greek mythology, who commanded the creation of Pandora?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Zeus commanded the creation of Pandora.

Hesiod presents Pandora as part of Zeus’s response to Prometheus’s theft of fire for humanity. Zeus orders the gods to create and equip a woman who will bring trouble to mortals. The gods contribute different gifts: Hephaestus forms her, Athena teaches or clothes her, and other divine figures add qualities in later descriptions and interpretations.

Zeus is the chief god of the Olympian pantheon and the authority behind the punishment. He is not the person who physically makes every part of Pandora in the myth. He directs the project, while several gods participate in her preparation.

The story is sometimes simplified into the idea that Pandora was made by one god alone. That version loses the myth’s emphasis on collective divine craftsmanship. It also makes it easier to confuse Zeus with Hephaestus, who is commonly credited with shaping Pandora’s body. The command, however, belongs to Zeus.
