In Greek mythology, who became Pandora’s husband after she was sent to humanity?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Epimetheus became Pandora’s husband after she was sent to humanity.

Epimetheus was a Titan associated with hindsight and afterthought. His name is commonly contrasted with Prometheus, whose name suggests forethought. Although Prometheus warned his brother not to accept gifts from Zeus, Epimetheus welcomed Pandora into his home.

Pandora’s arrival is part of Zeus’s punishment of humanity after Prometheus stole fire for mortals. In Hesiod’s Works and Days, Pandora is presented to Epimetheus, who accepts her despite the warning. This marriage places the jar or vessel within the household where its opening causes suffering to spread.

Epimetheus is not the same figure as Prometheus, even though the two are brothers in Greek mythology. Later traditions also connect Epimetheus and Pandora with Pyrrha, an important figure in stories about humanity’s renewal after a catastrophic flood.
