In Greek mythology, Epimetheus became Pandora’s husband after she was created by the gods.
Epimetheus was a Titan associated with hindsight and was the brother of Prometheus, whose name is linked with foresight. Prometheus warned Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus accepted Pandora anyway. Their marriage forms the immediate setting for the opening of the container in Hesiod’s story.
Pandora is often described in later retellings as the wife of Epimetheus, although the surviving ancient accounts focus more on the gods’ creation of her and the consequences of the jar being opened. Prometheus is sometimes mistakenly named as Pandora’s partner because he is central to the surrounding myth about fire and humanity.
