In Greek mythology, Epimetheus became Pandora’s husband after accepting her, despite his brother Prometheus’s warning. Epimetheus is a Titan associated with hindsight, while his name is commonly contrasted with Prometheus, whose name is linked with forethought.
Hesiod’s Works and Days says that Prometheus had warned Epimetheus never to accept a gift from Zeus. Nevertheless, Epimetheus received Pandora, who had been fashioned and equipped by the gods. Pandora later opened the container in the best-known form of the story, releasing troubles into the human world.
A common mix-up is to identify Prometheus as Pandora’s husband because he is central to the surrounding myth. Prometheus is instead her husband’s brother and the figure connected with stealing fire for humanity. Epimetheus also appears in other Greek myths, including the story of his daughter Pyrrha, who survives the great flood with Deucalion.
