In Greek mythology, Epimetheus became Pandora’s husband after accepting her from Zeus. Epimetheus was a Titan associated with hindsight and was the brother of Prometheus, whose name is linked with forethought.
Prometheus warned Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus ignored the warning when Pandora arrived. Their marriage places Pandora within the Titan family and connects her story to the punishment imposed on humanity after Prometheus stole fire.
The myth is often simplified into “Pandora opened the box,” but the earliest surviving account calls the container a pithos, or large storage jar. Epimetheus is important because his decision helps explain why Pandora entered the human world despite Prometheus’s caution.
