In Greek mythology, which Titan’s theft of fire led to the punishment involving Pandora’s Box?

The story behind the answer

Prometheus’s theft of fire led to the punishment involving Pandora’s Box in Greek mythology.

Prometheus was a Titan associated with forethought, craft, and the advancement of humanity. In Hesiod’s account, he deceived Zeus during a sacrifice and later stole fire for humans, hiding it in a fennel stalk. Zeus responded by arranging Pandora’s creation and sending her to Epimetheus.

The connection between the fire theft and Pandora appears in Hesiod’s Theogony and Works and Days. These poems present the events as part of Zeus’s punishment of humanity and Prometheus. The myth therefore links two major explanations of human existence: why people possess useful knowledge and why life also includes suffering.

Later writers, especially Aeschylus, developed Prometheus into a more sympathetic champion of humanity. That heroic image can overshadow Hesiod’s harsher version, in which the Pandora episode is chiefly an explanation for the burdens of mortal life.
