In Greek mythology, Prometheus was punished by being chained to the Caucasus. Zeus imposed the punishment after Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to humanity.
The punishment was especially severe: an eagle repeatedly ate Prometheus’s liver, which grew back because he was immortal. Heracles eventually killed the eagle and freed Prometheus in a later part of the mythic tradition.
Prometheus’s story connects directly with Pandora’s. In Hesiod, Zeus sends Pandora as a punishment after the theft of fire. Some later retellings combine details from several ancient sources, so the eagle, the Caucasus, and Pandora may appear in different narrative sequences.
