In Greek mythology, Prometheus stole fire from Mount Olympus for humanity.
Prometheus is a Titan celebrated for helping humans, but his theft challenged Zeus’s authority. Ancient accounts differ in some details, yet the central story is that Prometheus took divine fire and transferred its benefits to mortals.
Zeus punished him severely, while humanity received a separate punishment through Pandora. In Hesiod’s account, the creation and arrival of Pandora are connected to the wider conflict caused by Prometheus’s deception and theft. This makes Prometheus a central figure in the background of Pandora’s story, even though he is not the person who opens the container.
A common mix-up is confusing Prometheus with Epimetheus. Prometheus is the fire-bringer and the cautious brother; Epimetheus accepts Pandora and later discovers the consequences. Their names and contrasting qualities are deliberately paired in Greek mythology.
