In Greek mythology, which Titan stole fire before Zeus created Pandora?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Prometheus stole fire before Zeus created Pandora.

Prometheus is the Titan who takes fire from the gods and gives it to humanity. In Hesiod’s account, this act provokes Zeus, who responds by arranging the creation of Pandora and sending her as a destructive gift. The fire episode therefore provides the myth’s immediate cause for Pandora’s arrival.

Prometheus and Epimetheus are brothers, but they represent contrasting kinds of thought in the traditional interpretation of their names. Prometheus is associated with forethought, while Epimetheus is associated with afterthought. Prometheus’s caution also appears in his warning that Epimetheus should not accept gifts from Zeus.

Later writers, especially Aeschylus, develop Prometheus into a more heroic champion of humanity. Hesiod’s version is harsher and places greater emphasis on conflict between Zeus and humans. Across these traditions, Prometheus remains the figure linked to the theft or gift of fire.
