Prometheus is the Titan punished after giving fire to humanity in Greek mythology.
Prometheus’s theft of fire is the event that leads directly to Pandora’s creation in Hesiod’s account. Zeus is angered because fire gives humans a powerful advantage, so he orders a punishment that includes creating Pandora and sending her to Prometheus’s brother Epimetheus.
Prometheus is often portrayed as a benefactor of humanity, but ancient versions vary in their details and emphasis. In the broader mythic tradition, Zeus has Prometheus bound and subjected to a recurring ordeal. Pandora’s story belongs to the same chain of myths explaining the difficult condition of human life.
A common mistake is to treat Prometheus as Pandora’s husband or recipient. In Hesiod, Epimetheus receives Pandora, while Prometheus warns his brother not to accept gifts from Zeus. The names are easy to confuse because both brothers are central to the episode.
