Prometheus gave fire to humans before Zeus created Pandora in Greek mythology.
Prometheus is a Titan associated with foresight, craft, and humanity’s progress. In Hesiod’s accounts, he deceived Zeus during a sacrifice and later stole fire for human beings. Zeus punished him, and the creation of Pandora formed part of the retaliation against humanity.
The exact sequence and emphasis vary across ancient sources. Hesiod presents the myth as an explanation for why human life includes labor, disease, and other hardships. Later Greek and Roman writers often made Prometheus a more sympathetic champion of human civilization.
Modern retellings frequently connect him with science, invention, or rebellion. Those associations are rooted in later interpretations as much as in Hesiod. In the Pandora story, however, the essential link is clear: Zeus responds to the theft of fire by sending a destructive gift to humanity.
