In Greek mythology, Prometheus gave fire to humanity in the story linked to Pandora.
Prometheus is the Titan who steals or brings fire to humans after a conflict with Zeus. His act is a crucial background event in Hesiod’s Pandora narrative: Zeus responds to Prometheus’s challenge by arranging a new punishment for humanity. Pandora is then created and sent as a seemingly desirable gift.
The fire episode and the Pandora episode are related, but they are not the same event. Prometheus gives fire; Pandora opens the container. Epimetheus accepts Pandora, despite being warned by his brother. Keeping those roles separate prevents a common confusion in simplified retellings.
Later versions, especially those influenced by Roman writers and modern literature, expand Prometheus’s character and may emphasize his role as a creator of humans. The fire theft remains the central connection between Prometheus and the punishment that leads to Pandora’s arrival.
