Prometheus gave fire to humanity before Pandora appeared in the Greek myth.
Prometheus was a Titan associated with forethought and is portrayed as humanity’s benefactor. In Hesiod’s account, he deceived Zeus during a sacrificial division and later stole fire, often described as hiding it in a fennel stalk, to give it to humans. Zeus responded by planning a punishment for Prometheus and for humankind.
Pandora’s creation belongs to that punishment sequence. Zeus ordered the gods to make her, and her arrival brought a container holding destructive evils. The two episodes are therefore connected, but they are not the same event: Prometheus steals fire first, and Pandora’s opening of the vessel follows.
Later writers and artists often combine details from different ancient sources. The core relationship remains stable: Prometheus helps humans by giving them fire, while Zeus answers with a punishment that includes Pandora.
