In Greek mythology, Epimetheus accepted Pandora into his home despite Prometheus’s warning.
Epimetheus was a Titan associated with hindsight and was the brother of Prometheus, whose name is linked with forethought. Prometheus warned him not to accept gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus welcomed Pandora when she arrived.
Pandora brought the sealed container that Zeus had provided. When it was opened, suffering and other evils escaped into the world. The story presents Epimetheus’s decision as a consequence of acting without the caution represented by his brother.
The myth is often simplified as a story about Pandora alone, but Hesiod’s account also makes Epimetheus essential to the plot. His name is sometimes translated as “afterthought,” contrasting with Prometheus’s “forethought.”
