In Greek mythology, which man received Pandora as his wife despite Prometheus’s warning?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Epimetheus received Pandora as his wife despite Prometheus’s warning.

Epimetheus was a Titan associated with hindsight, while his brother Prometheus represented forethought. According to Hesiod, Prometheus warned Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus accepted Pandora anyway. Pandora was sent to humanity as part of Zeus’s punishment after Prometheus stole fire for mortals.

Hesiod’s account in Works and Days presents Pandora as the first woman and Epimetheus as the man who took her into his household. The story does not describe Epimetheus as being tricked by a literal box; the original Greek story refers to a large storage jar. The “box” wording developed later through translation and tradition.

A common mix-up is to identify Prometheus as Pandora’s husband. Prometheus was her connection to the stolen-fire episode, but Epimetheus was the husband named in the myth. Their daughter Pyrrha later became an important figure in the Greek flood story.
