In Greek mythology, which hero sailed with the Argonauts and defeated Amycus in boxing?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Polydeuces defeated Amycus in a boxing match during the Argonauts’ voyage.

Polydeuces, also called Pollux in Roman tradition, was one of the Dioscuri and the son of Zeus. His twin brother was Castor, who was mortal because he was fathered by the Spartan king Tyndareus. Both brothers joined Jason’s expedition aboard the Argo.

On the Bebrycian coast, the local king Amycus challenged every visitor to a boxing match and killed those he defeated. Polydeuces accepted the challenge and won, killing Amycus in the contest in many versions of the story. The episode demonstrates Polydeuces’ exceptional skill as a boxer.

The twins later became associated with the constellation Gemini. When Castor died, Polydeuces asked Zeus to let them share immortality. Their myth explains why the brothers are represented together despite having different fathers and different mortal status.
