In Greek mythology, which goddess taught Pandora the craft of weaving?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Athena taught Pandora the craft of weaving.

Hesiod’s Works and Days describes Pandora as a specially made woman whose abilities and attributes were supplied by several Olympian gods. Athena, the goddess associated with wisdom, crafts, and skilled work, taught Pandora practical textile craftsmanship. This detail places Pandora within the Greek cultural ideal of a capable woman skilled in household production.

Pandora was not created by a single god alone. Hephaestus fashioned her from earth, while other gods supplied qualities such as beauty, persuasion, and social skills. Athena’s contribution is therefore one part of a larger divine construction rather than the whole explanation for Pandora’s creation.

Modern retellings often simplify the story by focusing only on the jar and the evils released from it. Hesiod’s account is broader: Pandora is presented as a carefully assembled figure, with each god contributing a particular gift or capacity.
