In Greek mythology, which goddess advises Deucalion and Pyrrha after the flood linked to Pandora’s family?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Themis advises Deucalion and Pyrrha after the flood linked to Pandora’s family.

Deucalion and Pyrrha survive the flood sent by Zeus and seek guidance about restoring humankind. In the standard version of the myth, the goddess Themis tells them to throw the “bones of their mother” behind them. They interpret this riddle as an instruction to throw stones from Mother Earth. Stones cast by Deucalion become men, and stones cast by Pyrrha become women.

Themis is an ancient Greek goddess associated with divine law, custom, and order. Her role in this story is consistent with her wider identity as an interpreter of proper cosmic and social order. Some later accounts name Zeus or another divine source in related flood traditions, so ancient versions are not identical in every detail.

Pandora enters the genealogy because Pyrrha is traditionally described as her daughter. The flood narrative therefore extends the mythic consequences of Pandora’s generation into a story about the renewal of humanity.
