In Greek mythology, which god taught Pandora household crafts?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Athena taught Pandora household crafts.

Hesiod’s Works and Days presents Pandora as a deliberately constructed divine gift. Zeus commands the gods to make her, and each contributor adds a quality or skill. Athena, the goddess associated with wisdom, strategy, and crafts, teaches Pandora weaving and other forms of skilled work in many translations.

The episode reflects ancient Greek assumptions about women’s domestic roles, especially textile production and household management. It is therefore more than a list of supernatural gifts: it also mirrors the social expectations of the poem’s audience. Other gods contribute beauty, charm, speech, and desire.

Athena’s involvement is sometimes confused with Aphrodite’s because both are associated with qualities Pandora receives. Aphrodite supplies grace and desire in the account, while Athena’s contribution is practical skill. Hephaestus, meanwhile, shapes Pandora herself as the divine smith.
