In Greek mythology, which god ordered Pandora’s creation as part of Zeus’s plan?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Zeus ordered Pandora’s creation as part of his plan to punish humanity.

Hesiod connects Pandora’s story with the conflict between Zeus and Prometheus. Prometheus had taken fire and given it to humans, an act Zeus treated as a challenge to divine authority. Zeus therefore devised a broader punishment: the gods would create a woman whose arrival would bring suffering and hardship into the human world.

The myth assigns different tasks to different gods. Hephaestus fashions Pandora, while other deities provide clothing, ornaments, abilities, and deceptive qualities. Zeus is the planner and authority behind the episode, not the craftsman who physically shapes her. He also sends Pandora to Epimetheus, Prometheus’s brother, despite Prometheus’s warning not to accept gifts from Zeus.

The story is part of Hesiod’s explanation for why human life includes toil, disease, and other evils. It belongs to Greek mythology rather than to a single canonical religious scripture, so later retellings may change details while retaining Zeus’s central role.
