In Greek mythology, Hermes gave Pandora the ability to use persuasive speech. Hesiod’s account presents Hermes as one of the deities involved in furnishing Pandora after Hephaestus shaped her from earth.
The passage is often translated with wording such as “speech” or “a deceitful mind,” depending on the edition. Hermes is an appropriate contributor because he is the messenger of the gods and a deity associated with communication, cunning, trade, and trickery. His role helps explain why Pandora is portrayed as verbally compelling as well as physically attractive.
Hermes did not create Pandora’s body; that task is assigned to Hephaestus in Hesiod’s account. Aphrodite is also not the answer here, despite giving Pandora charm and desire. The myth distributes her characteristics among several gods, making it useful to distinguish each deity’s specific contribution.
