In Greek mythology, which god gave Pandora her famous jar or box?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Zeus gave Pandora the vessel later known as Pandora’s box.

Hesiod’s Works and Days presents Pandora as part of Zeus’s punishment of humanity after Prometheus stole fire. Zeus arranged for the gods to create Pandora and sent her to Epimetheus. The story says she carried a large storage vessel, although the familiar English expression “Pandora’s box” came from a later translation tradition. The original Greek object is usually identified as a pithos, a large jar.

The vessel’s ownership and delivery can be blurred in modern versions. Hephaestus made Pandora’s body, while other gods supplied attributes, but Zeus is the authority behind the gift and the punishment. The myth does not describe a small hinged box like one used in many modern illustrations.

Some retellings say Pandora received the container directly from a different god, but the central Hesiodic structure makes Zeus responsible for sending the gift. The answer therefore refers to the myth’s divine instigator, not the craftsman who formed Pandora.
