In Greek mythology, which god fashioned Pandora, the first woman?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Hephaestus fashioned Pandora, the first woman. Hesiod describes Zeus ordering the divine smith to make her from earth as part of a punishment aimed at humanity after Prometheus stole fire.

Other gods then gave Pandora qualities or gifts, including clothing, adornment, and persuasive speech. Her name is commonly interpreted as meaning “all-gifted,” because the gods contributed to her creation and equipment.

Pandora is often called the first woman in Greek mythology, though details differ between ancient sources. In Hesiod’s account, she is linked to the release of evils from a sealed container, an episode later popularized as “Pandora’s box.”

The container was originally described in Greek as a pithos, a large storage jar, not specifically a box. The familiar box wording became standard through later translations and retellings.
