In Greek mythology, which god fashioned Pandora from earth?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Hephaestus fashioned Pandora from earth. Hesiod describes Zeus ordering the divine craftsman to make the woman as part of the punishment directed at humanity after Prometheus’s theft of fire.

Hephaestus is the Olympian god most closely associated with metalworking, fire, workshops, and skilled manufacture. His role in Pandora’s creation fits that identity: he shapes the physical form, while other gods contribute qualities and adornments.

The myth is not the same as the later artistic image of Pandora emerging fully formed from a box. In Hesiod’s account, Pandora is made and prepared before she is presented to the human world. The vessel is connected with her story, but it is not described as the source of her body.

Modern retellings sometimes assign the entire creation process to Zeus or treat Pandora as a spontaneous supernatural apparition. The classical narrative instead distributes the work among several gods, with Hephaestus performing the central act of fashioning her from earth.
