In Greek mythology, which god created the first woman, Pandora, at Zeus’s command?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Hephaestus created Pandora at Zeus’s command.

Hesiod describes Zeus ordering Hephaestus to fashion Pandora from earth. Hephaestus was the Olympian god of fire, metalworking, smithing, and craftsmanship, making him the fitting divine artisan for the task. Other gods then bestowed qualities or gifts upon Pandora.

The myth presents Pandora as part of Zeus’s punishment after Prometheus brought fire to humanity. Her creation is therefore not an isolated birth story but part of a chain of retaliation between Zeus, Prometheus, and mortals. Pandora’s name is associated with the gifts supplied by the gods.

Later summaries sometimes say that Pandora was “made by all the gods,” but that wording refers to the gifts and adornments she received. The specific creator named in Hesiod’s account is Hephaestus, who shaped her body from earth.
