In Greek mythology, which god created Pandora as part of Zeus’s punishment for Prometheus’s theft?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Hephaestus created Pandora as part of Zeus’s punishment for Prometheus’s theft of fire. Hesiod describes Zeus ordering the divine craftsman to shape a woman from earth and water.

Hephaestus was the god of fire, metalworking, craftsmanship, and the forge. His role in making Pandora links the myth’s creation scene to the technical skill traditionally associated with him. Other gods then contribute qualities or gifts to the newly made woman.

Pandora’s creation follows Prometheus’s deception of Zeus and his theft of fire for humanity. The myth therefore connects the arrival of Pandora with the wider Greek explanation for why human life includes hardship.

Later retellings sometimes simplify the story by saying that all the gods independently created Pandora. In Hesiod’s account, however, Hephaestus is specifically the craftsman who forms her, while the other gods add attributes.
