In Greek mythology, which god crafted Pandora from clay on Zeus’s orders?

The story behind the answer

Hephaestus crafted Pandora from clay on Zeus’s orders in Greek mythology.

Hesiod’s Works and Days describes Pandora’s creation as part of Zeus’s punishment of humanity after Prometheus stole fire for mortals. Zeus commanded Hephaestus, the divine craftsman and god of fire and metalworking, to form Pandora’s body from earth. Other gods then contributed qualities, gifts, or skills to complete her.

This detail connects Pandora’s origin to Hephaestus’s traditional role as the Olympian artisan. The myth does not present Pandora as a naturally born human; instead, she is a divinely manufactured figure assembled through the cooperation of several gods. Her name, usually interpreted as “all-gifted,” reflects those contributions.

Later retellings often simplify the story by saying that Zeus himself created Pandora or that she emerged directly from a container. In Hesiod’s account, however, Hephaestus is the craftsman who gives her physical form, while the other gods provide attributes that shape her identity.
