In Greek mythology, Zeus commands the creation of Pandora as part of a punishment for humanity.
Hesiod connects Pandora’s creation with the conflict between Zeus and Prometheus. Prometheus has tricked Zeus in the division of a sacrificial animal and later steals fire for human beings. Zeus responds by ordering the gods to create a woman whose arrival will bring suffering to humanity.
Pandora is fashioned and adorned through the contributions of several gods. Hephaestus is associated with shaping her, while other deities provide qualities such as clothing, beauty, or speech. Zeus’s role is the command behind the project, not the physical making of the figure. The myth therefore differs from stories in which Zeus personally creates every human character. Pandora’s story also explains a Greek poetic view of why hardship exists alongside human life.
