In Greek mythology, Prometheus’s punishment led to the creation of Pandora.
Prometheus is the Titan associated with helping humanity, especially by stealing fire from the gods. Hesiod links this act to Zeus’s decision to impose a new punishment on human beings. Rather than simply taking fire back, Zeus arranges for Pandora to be made and sent to Epimetheus.
Prometheus’s name is also central because he understands the danger of accepting Zeus’s gifts and warns his brother. Epimetheus does not follow that advice. The result is the opening of the vessel and the release of suffering into the human world.
The Pandora episode is one part of Prometheus’s wider mythology. In another famous punishment, Zeus chains him to a mountain, where an eagle repeatedly eats his liver. That story is separate from the vessel’s opening, but both emphasize the consequences of defying Zeus.
