In Hesiod’s Pandora myth, Hermes gave Pandora her name. The name is linked to the gifts she received from the gods and is commonly translated as “All-gifted.”
Hesiod’s account divides Pandora’s construction and adornment among several divine figures. Hephaestus fashions her from earth, while other gods provide qualities, clothing, ornaments, and skills. Hermes is associated with giving her speech and with naming her Pandora. This distribution of roles is one reason the myth should not be reduced to a single creator deity.
Modern retellings often assign every part of Pandora’s making to Zeus or Hephaestus, but those versions simplify Hesiod’s narrative. Zeus initiates the plan as a punishment connected to Prometheus, and Hephaestus physically shapes the figure. Hermes performs the distinct role of naming Pandora in the traditional account.
