In Greek mythology, Hephaestus fashioned Pandora’s body from earth at Zeus’s command. Hephaestus was the Olympian god associated with fire, metalworking, craftsmanship, and technology, making him the fitting divine artisan for the task.
Hesiod’s Works and Days presents Pandora’s creation as part of Zeus’s punishment of humanity after Prometheus stole fire. Zeus orders Hephaestus to shape a woman, and other gods then contribute gifts or qualities that help define her character and name.
This detail is sometimes confused with the gifts themselves. Athena gives Pandora clothing and instruction in feminine crafts, while Aphrodite gives attractiveness and desire. Hermes contributes a deceptive mind and speech. Hephaestus’s role is specifically the physical making of Pandora, not the bestowing of every attribute.
