In Greek mythology, Hephaestus shaped Pandora from earth on Zeus’s orders.
Hephaestus is the Olympian god of fire, metalworking, smiths, and craft. His technical skill makes him the natural divine artisan for the creation of Pandora. In Hesiod’s account, Zeus commands him to form the woman from earth, after which other gods provide attributes and gifts.
The episode connects Pandora with a recurring Greek mythological idea: gods can manufacture living or lifelike beings through skilled craft. Hephaestus is also famous for forging divine weapons and objects, including armor associated with Achilles in later traditions. He should not be confused with Hermes, who serves as messenger and contributes qualities to Pandora, or Aphrodite, who is one of the gods associated with giving her beauty. The ancient myth thus distributes Pandora’s creation among several divine figures rather than assigning every action to Zeus alone.
