In Greek mythology, which craftsman god fashioned Pandora for the Pandora’s Box story?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Hephaestus fashioned Pandora for the Pandora’s Box story.

Hesiod’s Works and Days describes Zeus instructing Hephaestus to shape Pandora from earth. Hephaestus was the Olympian god of fire, metalworking, smithing, and craftsmanship, making him the natural divine artisan for this task.

Pandora’s creation was presented as part of Zeus’s response to Prometheus’s theft of fire. After Hephaestus made her, other gods contributed qualities or gifts. Athena taught her crafts, while Aphrodite gave her grace and desire in later summaries of the myth. Hermes supplied characteristics associated with speech and deception.

Hephaestus is sometimes mistaken for Prometheus because both figures are linked with fire and human civilization. Their roles are different: Hephaestus is the divine maker of Pandora, whereas Prometheus is the Titan who steals fire for humanity and is punished by Zeus.
