In Greek mythology, Zeus is most famously associated with wielding the thunderbolt.
The thunderbolt is Zeus’s signature weapon and a symbol of his authority as ruler of Mount Olympus and god of the sky. Greek myths often describe him using it to punish oath-breakers, defeat enemies, or display his divine power. It was not simply an ordinary lightning flash: in myth, the Cyclopes forged Zeus’s thunderbolt after he freed them from imprisonment.
The weapon is sometimes confused with Poseidon’s trident, but the two gods have different emblems. Poseidon rules the sea and carries a three-pronged trident, while Zeus commands the sky and uses the thunderbolt. Hades, another brother, is associated with the helm of darkness.
Ancient Greek artists frequently represented Zeus holding or throwing a stylized lightning bolt. Roman mythology preserved the same association, identifying Zeus with Jupiter, who also wielded a thunderbolt.
