In Greek mythology, what was the name of the woman created by the gods before Pandora’s jar was opened?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, the woman created by the gods was Pandora.

Hesiod presents Pandora as the first human woman in the Greek myth of the jar later known as Pandora’s box. The gods give her different gifts, and her name is commonly interpreted as meaning “all-gifted” or “all-giving.”

Pandora is sent to Epimetheus, the brother of Prometheus. Although Prometheus warns Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, Epimetheus welcomes Pandora. The story then turns on the opening of a sealed container, which releases suffering into the world.

The familiar phrase “Pandora’s box” is slightly misleading. Hesiod describes a large storage jar, called a pithos in Greek, rather than a small box. Later translations and artistic tradition helped establish the English expression used today.
