In Greek mythology, what was the name of the ship that carried Jason and the Argonauts?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, the ship that carried Jason and the Argonauts was called the Argo.

The Argo transported Jason and his companions on their expedition to Colchis in search of the Golden Fleece. The crew became known as the Argonauts, a name derived from their ship. Ancient versions do not always give identical details about the vessel, but the Argo is consistently central to the story.

The ship was traditionally built by the craftsman Argus, under the guidance or protection of Athena. Some traditions also say that a prophetic plank from Dodona was placed in the vessel, giving it a special connection with divine knowledge.

The Argo is sometimes confused with the name Argonauts. Argo is the ship; Argonauts are the heroes who sailed aboard it. The expedition is narrated most fully in Apollonius Rhodius’s third-century BCE epic, the Argonautica, although the story is older than that poem.
