Answer
Judgment of Paris
Answer
Judgment of Paris
In Greek mythology, the golden apple contest judged by Paris was called the Judgment of Paris.
At the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, Eris, goddess of discord, was excluded from the celebration. She threw a golden apple marked for “the fairest.” Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite each claimed it, and Zeus avoided choosing among them by assigning the decision to Paris, a prince of Troy.
Each goddess offered Paris a reward. Hera promised power, Athena promised victory and wisdom, and Aphrodite promised the love of the most beautiful woman in the world. Paris awarded the apple to Aphrodite, who helped him obtain Helen, the wife of Menelaus.
The episode became a major mythological explanation for the Trojan War. The story is also the source of the expression “apple of discord.” Paris’s decision is often called a beauty contest, but the myth emphasizes divine rivalry, bribery, and the consequences of his choice.
