In Greek mythology, what was Prometheus punished for giving to humanity before Pandora appeared?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Prometheus was punished for giving fire to humanity before Pandora appeared.

Prometheus is a Titan who is portrayed as a benefactor of humans. In the best-known version of the myth, he stole fire from the gods and delivered it to mortals. Fire represented practical knowledge, technology, cooking, craft, and a degree of independence from the gods.

Zeus punished Prometheus by having him bound to a mountain, where an eagle repeatedly ate his liver. Because Prometheus was immortal, the organ regenerated, making the punishment continuous. Heracles eventually freed him in later mythic tradition.

The fire story and Pandora story are linked in Hesiod's account. Zeus's response to Prometheus's defiance included creating Pandora as a new burden for humanity. Other ancient writers emphasized different details, but fire is the central gift associated with Prometheus.
