In Greek mythology, what type of being was Prometheus, Pandora’s relative?

The story behind the answer

Prometheus was a Titan in Greek mythology. He belongs to the older generation of divine beings who preceded the Olympian gods led by Zeus.

Prometheus is connected to Pandora because his theft of fire provides the reason for Zeus’s punishment. Hesiod presents Zeus as responding to Prometheus’s deception and theft by arranging the creation of Pandora. Pandora later marries Prometheus’s brother Epimetheus, making the Titan part of her family story as well.

Titans are not all identical in role or temperament. Prometheus is often shown as a benefactor of humanity and a clever challenger of Zeus, while other Titans oppose the Olympians in the cosmic war called the Titanomachy. Prometheus’s survival and continuing presence in later myths make him unusual among the Titan generation.

The term “Titan” is sometimes used loosely to mean any enormous or powerful being. In Greek mythology, however, it specifically identifies a divine generation descended from Uranus and Gaia, including Prometheus and his father Iapetus.
