In Greek mythology, what type of being was Pandora made to become?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Pandora was made to become the first woman.

Hesiod presents Pandora as the first woman among humans. Zeus orders her creation as part of the punishment imposed on Prometheus and humanity after Prometheus gives humans fire. Her arrival therefore marks a major change in the mythic explanation of human life.

The story is not simply an account of an individual woman discovering a mysterious object. Pandora represents a new condition for humankind and is connected with marriage, reproduction, labor, and suffering in Hesiod’s wider description. The poem’s portrayal reflects ancient Greek social assumptions and is not a neutral historical account of women.

Pandora is sometimes called a goddess in modern popular culture because the gods make her and give her attributes. In Hesiod, however, she is fashioned as a woman rather than introduced as an Olympian goddess or immortal deity.
