In Greek mythology, what single good thing remains inside Pandora’s container?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, hope is the single good thing that remains inside Pandora’s container. Hesiod says that after the evils escape, Elpis, the personification of hope, stays within the vessel when Pandora closes it.

The detail creates one of the myth’s most debated moments. Some interpretations see hope as a blessing preserved for humanity, while others note that it remains trapped and ask whether that is comforting or problematic. Hesiod does not provide a simple modern explanation, so later readers have supplied different meanings.

The familiar phrase “Pandora’s box” also changes the original imagery. Hesiod describes a large storage vessel, commonly translated as a jar, not a small box. The surviving hope is nevertheless central to the modern expression, which often means that even after widespread trouble, some possibility of good remains.
