In Greek mythology, what single force remained in Pandora’s jar after the evils escaped?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Hope remained in Pandora’s jar after the evils escaped. Hesiod’s Works and Days says that Hope stayed inside when Pandora replaced the lid.

The Greek word elpis is usually translated as “hope,” although scholars have discussed its precise meaning and role. The story does not simply present Hope as another ordinary evil; its remaining inside has generated different interpretations for centuries.

Some readers understand the ending as a promise that hope remains available to humanity. Others interpret the closed jar more ambiguously, asking whether Zeus withheld hope or preserved it for human beings. The text itself is brief, which allows these readings to coexist.

The detail is often remembered inaccurately as “hope escaped last.” In Hesiod’s account, the other evils got out, but Hope remained within the container when it was closed.
