In Greek mythology, hope remained inside Pandora’s jar after it was closed.
Hesiod says Pandora released the troubles stored in the vessel, but hope stayed within it because Pandora shut the container before it escaped. This detail has produced centuries of debate: some readers see hope as a comfort preserved for humanity, while others note that the Greek word elpis can mean expectation more broadly than optimistic hope.
The myth does not provide a long philosophical explanation of why hope was left behind. Later retellings usually present it as a final blessing that allows humans to endure the evils released into the world. The exact ending therefore supports several interpretations, but the conventional answer in modern retellings is hope.
