In Greek mythology, what punishment did Zeus impose on Prometheus before Pandora’s creation?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Zeus punished Prometheus by chaining him to a mountain before Pandora’s creation.

Prometheus angered Zeus by stealing fire from the gods and giving it to humanity. In the punishment described by later mythological tradition, Zeus had Prometheus bound to Mount Caucasus. An eagle then repeatedly ate his liver, which regenerated because Prometheus was immortal.

Hesiod connects the punishment of Prometheus with the creation of Pandora, presenting Pandora as a further punishment for humanity after the theft of fire. Different ancient authors emphasize different parts of the story, and the eagle-and-liver episode is especially prominent in later sources such as Aeschylus.

Prometheus was eventually freed by Heracles, who killed the eagle in the best-known version of the rescue. The myth therefore links fire, divine punishment, human suffering, and the eventual release of the Titan.
