In Greek mythology, Elpis is the personification of hope in Pandora’s jar. Hesiod names Elpis as the presence that remains after the other troubles escape.
Elpis is a Greek abstract personification, comparable to other figures who embody human qualities or experiences. In the Pandora story, the character is not simply an ordinary emotion mentioned in passing; Elpis functions as a mythological figure connected with the jar’s final contents.
Translations usually render the name as “Hope,” which is why many retellings omit the Greek name entirely. The ancient wording has also produced debate about whether hope is a comfort preserved for humanity or an ambiguous force held back inside the jar. The text itself does not settle every interpretive question.
Nike represents victory, Iris is associated with the rainbow and divine messages, and Tyche represents fortune or chance. Those figures belong to different mythological traditions within the Greek pantheon and are not the being named in Pandora’s jar.
