In Greek mythology, Hephaestus formed Pandora from earth.
Hesiod describes Zeus ordering Hephaestus to make a woman from earth. Hephaestus, the divine craftsman and smith, gives shape to the material, after which other gods add their gifts. The image combines a physical creation scene with a divine ceremony of adornment and instruction.
“Earth” is sometimes paraphrased as clay in modern retellings, but the canonical mythic wording is earth or soil rather than a named metal. Pandora is also not described as a mechanical figure in Hesiod. Later art and literature have supplied many visual interpretations, but the ancient story emphasizes her crafted body and the separate qualities bestowed by the gods.
