In Greek mythology, Prometheus was a Titan linked to Pandora’s origin story. The Titans are an older generation of divine beings who precede the Olympian gods in Greek mythic genealogy.
Prometheus is especially known for helping humanity. In the best-known version of his fire myth, he steals fire from the gods and gives it to humans. Zeus’s response to that act leads into the creation of Pandora, making Prometheus an essential figure in the background of the Pandora story.
Prometheus is not an Olympian god, although he interacts directly with Zeus and other Olympians. He is also distinct from Epimetheus, another Titan and his brother. Epimetheus accepts Pandora, while Prometheus recognizes the danger and advises against accepting Zeus’s gift.
Ancient sources do not tell every part of the story in exactly the same way. Still, identifying Prometheus as a Titan is a stable and central fact across standard accounts of Greek mythology.
